In the late '60s to mid-'70s, there was a Roaring '20s fetishism happening in mainstream American pop culture. I call it "Seventies Twenties"—a romanticized version of the century's third decade; dreams of a simpler time, through the lens of (mostly white) Baby Boomers dismayed by the social upheaval, presidential politics, and terrifying violence going on around them.

Aside from nostalgic new productions of '20s musicals and some tributes in fashion, the revival manifested mainly in the form of homages to hand-cranked silent films and ragtime music, from Scott Joplin's bar-room piano standards to the placid early jazz of small orchestras enjoyed by socialites on sinking luxury liners. This record came toward the end of that wave, as the early-'70s to mid-'80s fascination with the culture of the 1950s (again, romanticized) was becoming more popular.

Fiedler in Rags is a prime example of peak Seventies Twenties. The hair and makeup and drab color photo could only be from the '70s, no matter how evocative of the '20s it's trying to be. Likewise, the pompous, echo-y arrangements of ragtime classics which were intended to be played on solo piano or by small ensembles rather than a full orchestra, represents the "too much is never enough" indulgences of the post-Vietnam culture rather than reliving the post-World War I euphoria.

That said, there's not a dull moment on the record. Arthur Fiedler had already long been a leader in introducing the sound and feel of the classical orchestra to younger generations through orchestral performances of contemporary non-classical music. Here, he joins in the Seventies Twenties zeitgeist with as much stately fervor as he can muster, always in a way that suggests he could segue right into a Sousa march or Tchaikovsky overture at any moment, without missing a beat. The results are not particularly pretty, but then, neither was the ragtime and early jazz, compared to what came before it.

This recycling and repurposing of music through a deliberate, sometimes baffling combination of old and new, is exactly what continues to be taken to ever-further extremes by each successive generation. There's such irony (or is it hypocrisy?) when Boomers—people who loved Fiedler in Rags, or blues rock, or reggae-soaked '80s pop—utter nonsense about the death of creativity as ideas are recycled and pop culture references itself within ever-shorter timeframes. They were doing it too! This record is but one example.
