Sticker on shrink wrap reads:
12" Singles reproduced from original artwork and audio masters.
Cut at Abbey Road Studios.

See You
The Meaning Of Love
Leave In Silence

Includes reproduction of original marketing poster & digital download code.

Additional notes:
Despite having a unique barcode and catalog number for Rhino Records for the US, the contents of the box seem to be identical to the Mute Records release (Depeche Mode - A Broken Frame | The 12″ Singles). The individual 12" sleeves have the Mute Records catalog number printed on the spines and the labels on each 12" are consistent with that release as well.

According to Daniel Barassi who created these box sets, they are not remastered."I am working with Sony to pull every single tape that might be related to each single, evaluate which is the master (based on a lack of a fade out, 15 or 30 ips, if dolby was used, et cetera). I get the hi res digital files from Abbey Road, then do appropriate fade outs, repair edits, remove hum, or any other fixes, then those files are sent to the cutting people to make a lacquer. When the test pressings are made, I am then proofing the test pressings against the original 12" singles, to make sure they are identical. If it has anything to do with audio on this project, it's on me. Paul Taylor (Mute art guy since late 1990) is doing all the art." In Daniel's Instagram account post below, he clearly states these are not remastered." [email protected] there is no real "remastering". They are being made, from the analog masters, to exactly match the original 12" singles. I am going and taking out some hums and things from live recordings, otherwise these are being made to match the original 12" singles." The digital downloads are full 16 bit WAV files.
Please excuse me while I do my happy dance - "YES, the boxes will have ALL the L12 releases"
As I am being mentioned, I thought I would chime in...A lot of sites, and the label, are saying these vinyl box sets are "remastered". "Remastering", when I hear the word being used, usually means a lot of EQ tweaks, compression, and brick wall limiting. How I see it: I am personally getting flat transfers of the master tapes from Abbey Road. I am applying gain envelopes (fade outs) where appropriate, and otherwise not messing with the audio. The audio is "mastered" already. I'm just adding a fade, here and there (and some light repair work, see below), and that is what is being sent to the lacquer cutter. Again, I would consider "remastering" to be adding EQ, compression, and other mastering techniques. I am not doing that. When I have been receiving the test pressings, I have been doing rigid A/B testing against the original 12" singles. My end mission: The new 2018 vinyl has to sound identical to the original Mute 12" singles. If you want to call that "remastering", fine, but I just think of it as making exact replicas of 12" singles that have been out of print for years. The only altering of history I have done, so far, was to remove some annoying hum from a few live tracks, which was not possible with the technology of the era that the record originally was released in.And, to answer a question I saw pop up, YES, the boxes will have ALL the L12 releases!Daniel Barassi (aka bratmix)
Thanks for the info, may have to get these if for just the hi-res downloads. Are there any additional tracks on the download that don't feature on the vinyls?
Ahhaaaa, i cannot wait to grab these! i have the originals as well, but good to hear the essence is not touched, original cuts sound also very fine.
"I do appropriate fade outs, repair edits, remove hum, or any other fixes".Well this looks like a fair amount of work engineers usually carry out for remastering...
$60 for 7 songs.. wow. That is rather expensive. $20 for each 12" single ?
I'm surprised Construction Time Again is $100+. Some Great Reward is arguably better and cheaper... lol.
Just wait until you see the prices for the Construction Time Again / Some Great Reward boxes.Sorry, but I'm out...
Is the digital download lossless? I wonder if the master suffered a remastering or not.
Yes wav files, but really miss fine organization, and miss lot of dynamics.I start to collect the best digital sources from past various sources, like x boxes singles boxes old cd singles...difficult job but worth it.
Yes, the downloads are WAV files. The chain: master tape / digitization / me prepping the digital files for vinyl / Sony using those prepped files for the digital downloads. There was a hiccup on release day with Rhino's versions of the downloads for the first two boxes, but that should all be fixed now.
supposedly it's from the same masters as originals and should sound identical to the originals. At least that was advertised.
